What is a pterygium?

Pterygium (surfer’s eye) is a non-cancerous, fleshy overgrowth of tissue that grows on the surface of the eye. It originates from the clear natural lining (the conjunctiva) and grows onto the central clear window of the eye (the cornea). A pterygium typically appears in your twenties or thirties and tend to grow slowly over time.

Why does pterygium matter?

If a pterygium is small and not causing problems, no treatment is required. However, it can cause eye discomfort including burning, irritation, redness, tearing and foreign body sensation. As the pterygium grows, it can change the shape of the eye (astigmatism) or grow over the line of sight, causing blurred vision.

What causes pterygium and how can I prevent it getting worse?

The main risk factor for pterygium is UV sun exposure. Australia has one of the highest rates of pterygia in the world because of our outdoor lifestyle and sunny climate.

As such, you should wear a broad brimmed hat and wrap-around sunglasses that are compliant with Australian standards.

Eye discomfort from pterygia is often exacerbated by the wind, cold weather or dry conditions. Lubricating eye drops will provide some short term relief.

How is pterygium treated?

If the pterygium is causing considerable eye discomfort, cosmetically unacceptable or a risk to vision, surgical excision is required.

The aim of surgery is to prevent recurrence and achieve an excellent cosmetic outcome. Dr Yun will perform a meticulous removal of the pterygium and fill the gap using tissue from the upper conjunctiva. This tissue has traditionally been held in place with stitches. However, Dr Yun uses an innovative “sutureless” technique, which ensures a faster and relatively pain-free recovery.

How painful is pterygium surgery?

The operation is performed under a local anaesthetic given by a specialist anaesthetist. As a result, the operation itself is painless, although you may be a little sore for a few days. Rapid recovery from “sutureless” pterygium surgery means you should be able to return to work within a few days.

Can I have pterygium surgery with Dr Yun if I am uninsured?

If you do not have private health insurance, Dr Yun can still perform your pterygium surgery at very reasonable prices. A quote will be provided at your consultation.
