What does cataract surgery involve?

Cataract surgery is performed as a day procedure. This is normally performed with the eye under a local anaesthetic to ensure the procedure is painless.  If you would like, the anaesthetist can put you under twilight sedation so you can sleep soundly throughout and without any recollection.

The natural lens is removed through incisions around 2mm wide. These are generally so small they do not even require stitches. A clear artificial intraocular lens is inserted to replace the cataract. The procedure takes around 20 minutes.

Is cataract surgery safe?

Modern cataract surgery is considered safe and routine for the vast majority of patients. However, as with all operations, there are potential complications. Dr Yun will discuss these uncommon risks with you at your consultation.

Am I able to get rid of my glasses?

Short sightedness, far sightedness and astigmatism can be corrected at the time of cataract surgery. Pre-operative measurements are carried out with precision to determine the correct power of the artificial lens you need. A routine approach aims to provide patients with clear distance vision without glasses but with the need for reading glasses for near vision.

Recent developments in intraocular lenses, such as extended depth of focus or multifocal lenses, may allow patients to avoid wearing glasses entirely. These premium lenses can improve quality of life if selected for the right patients. Dr Yun will determine if you are a candidate for this type of procedure and will discuss the various options with you.

Dr Yun is committed to using the latest technology for optimal outcomes, including:

  • Zeiss Callisto eye computer assisted cataract surgery

  • Toric lenses

  • Multifocal lenses and Extended range of vision intraocular lenses to reduce your dependence on glasses.

How much does cataract surgery cost?

Insured cataract surgery is only covered by “Gold” level private health cover plans. There will usually be a “known gap” for the surgery of $500 for the vast majority of insurance companies.

There is no gap on the hospital admission or on the lens. There may be a small anaesthetic gap fee. You may have elected to have an excess on your insurance plan. You will be given a full quote for the surgery on the day you see Dr Yun for an assessment.

I don’t have insurance – How much does cataract surgery cost?

If you are uninsured, the total out-of-pocket fee to have your cataract operation done privately will be approximately $2500 per eye for a monofocal non-toric lens. This price includes the surgeon, anaesthetist and hospital fees. There will be some variation in this fee, with some private hospitals offering a discount for pensioners. This price does not include your initial consultation or prescription costs for post-op medications.
